Turret goes Robotic – Perth Australia

THE TURRET™ is a floating water intake device which solves the problem of drawing from shallow water with its patent-pending radial design.

An incredible Australian design being embraced around the world, The Turret is manufactured in Rockingham, Perth, Australia. An integral part of the 3m product is the Poly Cage, which gives structural integrity to the system. This Poly Cage has a very specific design with critical angles that allow The Turret to function as well as it does.

For years this part has been manufactured manually taking almost a full day and proved to be the bottleneck of the production line. Robotic Innovations Australia was contracted to supply a solution for not only the cutting and trimming of the Poly Cage, but also to cut and trim many of the parts The Turret consist of.

The Fanuc R2000iC 210F robot was selected due to its accuracy and rigidity. A VSD controlled 4KW motor is mounted to the front of the robot to perform the cuts and trims. On completion a cycle time of 1 hour and 20 minutes was achieved per Poly Cage.

This allowed Turret Engineering to gain an employee for the assembly process and eliminated the bottleneck.
